What we do

The White's Chapel Refugee Initiative is a ministry of White's Chapel Methodist Church. Good-hearted persons of all affiliations and faiths are welcome to participate. Our volunteers combine their varied backgrounds and talents to assist U.S.-sponsored (legal) refugees through their resettlement and transition into American life. We help families succeed and thrive in their new world.  Together, we cover the waterfront of solutions to life's questions.

FAQ

As our refugees learn through our examples, they rapidly turn to not only helping themselves, but to guiding those who arrive after them. Yesterday's English learners are joining today's English Language faculty, showing new arrivals how they, too, can contribute to their new community.WCRI volunteers enlarge the circle of life.

Where do most of the refugees come from?

Our team supports refugees from all over the world - from Africa, Southeast Asia, Afghanistan, Ukraine, the Caribbean and more.

What is English Language Learning (ELL)?

ELL partners English speakers with a team to teach English to adult refugees. Our teams use six levels of Cambridge’s VENTURES curriculum. We listen to our students read and discuss a variety of content. We help them decode signs, forms, menus, newspaper articles, and books – and also assist with pronunciation and vocabulary building.

Can I get service or volunteer hours?

Yes! Contact us to connect and get involved.

What are other ways I can help?

WCRI has exciting openings for every interest and time available! See ABOUT US. We engage in tutoring and assist with scholarship and admission applications. We facilitate career transitions by modeling job searches, resumes and interviews. We connect patients with physicians and when necessary, diplomate hospital care and surgical payment plans. We assist pro bono attorneys in securing accurate paperwork for asylum, negotiate with landlords, and assist in entrepreneurial efforts. We counsel and befriend.

What is the Genius Bar?

Volunteers offer their unique talents for unique projects. Sometimes these involve a simple telephone call; sometimes there is research or a project that evolves to respond to a specific refugee request for assistance.
